Youth Hubs Archive

As part of the Aspiring Emerging Associates Initiative, BCTC provides support for projects that engage young artists and youth around the province through the Youth Hub Initiatives. Youth Hub projects not only showcase the talent of local and regional aspiring emerging artists, they also provide opportunities to engage with youth, young audiences, as well as diverse and Indigenous communities. Youth Hub projects provide inspiration and ideas to all looking to engage youth, young audiences, and artists in their own communities.

Lounge Car Sessions, Smithers Community Radio

Smithers Community Radio continue to host their Lounge Car Sessions where youth perform in front of a live audience in a 100-year-old train car that accommodates an intimate live audience open to all ages. Performances are broadcast on FM radio and streamed via Facebook Live. Performers receive a high-quality recording they can use for their own purposes. As part of their current program, they plan to expand their reach to include emerging artists throughout the region from Prince George to Haida Gwaii with a specific focus on  Indigenous performers. In addition to their Lounge Car Sessions, their Station Manager continues to share their experience and expertise with other community and campus stations in BC to encourage other stations to undertake similar programs.

Dances for a Small Stage: Artists in Residence Program, Vancouver

A unique program for emerging dance artists and choreographers in BC, Small Stage youth artists were challenged to create and learn choreography and use their own social media tools to promote and create a buzz for their work. By providing creative, technical, marketing, and financial support, artists showed how they could develop works that are hybrid creations for live and virtual audiences. The program involved the creation of work with live performances as part of their Winter’s Dance Series on Robson Street in Vancouver and at the Shipyards Plaza in North Vancouver. Cedar House Sessions, Haidi Gwaii Radio

The Cedar House Sessions are an online radio and YouTube series that features local and visiting artists. It is a collaborative effort of the Haida Gwaii Radio Society and the Ging Gang Hla tllGad Independent Music and Arts Co-operative. The shows are organized, filmed, recorded, edited, produced, and published by a youth crew from Haida Gwaii. Local artists spend time at the “Cedar House” to record and film a live performance and an “on-stage” interview. The session is broadcast live on Haida Gwaii Radio. When film editing is complete, a video is published on their YouTube Channel. Participating artists receive mastered copies of the recordings. Since its inception, the series has explored a range of genres and performers, from punk and metal, folk, rock, to spoken word. The show has succeeded in its primary goal to showcase the talent on Haida Gwaii, while giving youth the experience being a part of a production. They are keen on finding new ways to engage artists and audiences in their community and region.
