Special performance:
Renae Morriseau with a performance by M’Girl
M’Girl Music is an urban Indigenous women’s vocal ensemble that’s been together for over 20 years. M’Girl loves to sing and blend their voices harmonically in all their traditional songs.
Today M’Girl, a collective of urban Indigenous women from different nations of Turtle Island, features Renae Morriseau, Deanna Gestrin and Cheri Maracle. The colonial forces of government, and church, the loss of land, and language, has minimized their respective Indigenous matrilineal lines. M’Girl celebrates the restoration of women in song, and provides a lens into how each M’Girl honours their cultural perspectives on these lands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tlseil-Waututh.
Renae Morriseau
M’Girl Music is managed by Renae Morriseau. She has been gifted songs through ceremony and composes hand drum songs in Cree and Saulteaux, her families language(s). She is a writer, singer, theatre and film director. She currently teaches Indigenous film studies at Capilano University’s Indigenous Film program.
