Former Children’s Festival’s Artistic Director Dies at 60 – Marjorie MacLean passed away in Vancouver last week after a long fight with cancer. Marjorie started off her career as a practicing visual artist and sculptor while also beginning to work in the performing arts. During this time she was hired as a technician for a new concept in presenting Canadian performing arts for young audiences. This was the Vancouver International Children’s Festival, an event that became the foremost North American showcase for professional children’s theatre, music and dance. From 1992 to 2000 she held the role of both artistic director and producer, establishing an international touring circuit for visiting artists from around the world to children’s festivals in Canada and the United States.

The BC Touring Council which administers BC Arts Council’s Community Presenters Assistance is pleased to announce a significant funding-level increase in the 2013/14 presenting season (July 2013 to June 2014).

In the words of Stan Hamilton, Chair of the BC Arts Council: “The BC Arts Council is pleased to be receiving a record level of funding for 2013-14. This investment will enable council to expand its support for the Community Presenters Assistance program, delivered in partnership with the BC Touring Council. We are proud to increase support for B.C. presenters, who bring the excellent work of our touring artists to communities across the province.”

The overall level of awards money in the program has been increased to $331,500 (from $230,000 this year)!

What does this mean for qualifying BC presenters?

Maximum level of award per application has increased to:

- Key Presenter: $15,000 (it was $10,000 in 2012 / $7,000 in 2011)

- Community Presenter: $10,000 (it was $6,000 in 2012 / $4,500 in 2011)

- Diverse Collaborations remains at the same level of $5,000 however, in a case where a Key or Community Presenter wishes to also apply for Diverse Collaborations, they will be eligible for the full $5,000 in addition to their main category award.

Significant change in the funding level is the maximum amount eligible for artist fee which increases to $4,000 (from $2,000) per artist/company. This will facilitate the support of a broader, more diverse level of performances in many disciplines and address the rising artist fees.

The Guidelines for the program will remain the same. Only the areas around maximum award levels and the eligible amount for artist fees will change.

New forms will be available online at the BC Touring Council website later in April. We will be emailing clients when they are posted.

John McLachlan (Program Coordinator) and I are very excited by this significant increase of funding for presenters and touring artists in BC and we congratulate the BC Arts Council for its continued support of this program that has such a positive impact in all our communities.

If you’re attending Pacific Contact this week, make sure to drop by the “CPA” booth and chat with John McLachlan (BCTC) and Monique Lacerte-Roth (BC Arts Council) during the Friday and Saturday Contact Room times.

Fundamental forces – profound demographic change, powerful mobile technologies, increasing market fragmentation, continuing economic uncertainty – are challenging the assumptions underlying the performing arts ecosystem. Over 2 years, The Value of Presenting study, spearheaded by CAPACOA and the presenting networks, has collected important new data to help make sense of these issues. Drawing from this landmark study and other recent reports on the performing arts, this workshop will trace changes in consumer behaviour due to transformative communications technologies and offer a fresh look at demographic change and attendance at performing arts.
BC Arts & Cuture Week Now in its 14th year, BC Arts and Culture Week April 21-27, 2013 highlights the vital contribution that arts and culture make in learning and in life. Art, in one form or another—music, film, books, visual and media arts, theatre—is part of our daily lives. It helps bring communities together and makes them more vibrant, creative, and economically diverse. This is an open call to join the celebration of BC’s arts and culture! From artists and craft practitioners to curators and cultural programmers; from educators and their students to culturally diverse community groups; whether you live in a city, a suburb or a remote rural area of the province — everyone is welcome! http://bcartsweek.org/events.

I WANT TO SHOWCASE – I Want to Showcase (IWTS) is a multi-conference registration site allowing artists to apply to several Contact Events across North America in one convenient place! In past years, I Want to Showcase has hosted applications for Ontario Contact, Contact East, and Alberta Showcase. This year the site will also host Arts Midwest Conference, Manitoba Showcase Contact, OSAC Showcase, Performing Arts Exchange, and Western Arts Alliance Conference. With all these conferences in one spot, IWTS wants to make the application process easy for our artists! You will receive a “recall code” directly to your inbox upon completion of your application to any conference. When you return to IWTS to start a new application for the same artist, enter your recall code in step 1, and voila! All data from your original application will be carried over – now all you need to do is some minor tweaking to ensure you’ve provided all required application info. As each conference opens its application process they will appear on the iwanttoshowcase.ca site.

Arts Northwest – The online Juried Showcase application is now open at www.artsnw.org.

BC Creative Futures supports the provincial economy by helping to foster a creative workforce through more arts opportunities for young British Columbians, by building a comprehensive, sector-wide vision to support the development and growth of B.C.’s creative industries and by expanding capacity at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.
The BC Arts Council (BCAC), an independent agency supporting artists and cultural organizations throughout the province, and the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development (MCSCD) will deliver a $6.25-million package of new and expanded existing programs to support the strategy, including:
· Creative Youth Initiatives – $2 million (BCAC)
· After School Sport and Arts Initiative – $1 million (MCSCD)
· Artists in the Classroom Program – $500,000 (BCAC)
“Some of the best run arts organizations in North America are those operated by volunteer leadership. I had the pleasure of meeting leaders from several at the Alberta Showcase for arts presenting organizations in Fort Saskatchewan produced by the Arts Touring Alliance of Alberta (Canada). These leaders come from varying backgrounds, with a mix of degrees and professions including architecture, forestry, agriculture and medicine (both nurses and doctors). They work diligently year-around to research, book and present exceptional artists in order engage their communities in the arts. There’s no doubt about the effectiveness and high return on investment of their work.
Canada’s favourite cross-town bus is back on the road.

Vancouver’s Axis Theatre Company is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of its wildly popular play, The Number 14, with a cross-Canada tour.
Created as a co-production between Axis and Touchstone Theatre in 1992, the original plan was to take it on a short tour through BC finishing with a two and a half week run at the 125 seat Firehall Arts Centre in Vancouver.
The collaboration between Wayne Specht, Artistic Director of Axis Theatre, and Touchstone’s then Artistic Director, Roy Surette, came out of their desire to create an original physical theatre play in the style they called “contemporary Commedia Dell Arte”.
The two brought together some of the best physical theatre artists in the city with the goal to capture the absurdity, diversity and chaos of living in the city.
The group spent weeks creating the characters who would embody these concepts then came up with the inspired idea of putting them all on the #14 bus that, at the time, covered the whole city.
“It went from the poorest to the wealthiest part of town,” says performer Sarah Rodgers. “I think that’s what gives this show so much heart. It embraces all walks of life.”
Rodgers first joined the cast 1998. Since then, the show has taken her across the country and around the world.
“It’s a great privilege to be part of this,” she says. “People all over the world love this show. The houses are packed wherever we go.”
Rodgers attributes the success of The Number 14 to the fact that it is unique and familiar at the same time.
“Most people have never seen anything like this,” she says, “but there is instant recognition of these characters all across the world.”
Not only does it not seem to matter what culture you come from or what language you speak, the show also appeals to a very wide age range.
They noticed early in the original run of the show that their target audience of 20 to 40 year olds expanded to include many seniors. They were also surprised to find that people where seeing the show more than once, and bringing their children along.
Since part of Axis Theatre’s mandate is to create theatre for young audiences, they seized the opportunity to create versions that were aimed specifically at youth and family audiences, thus expanding their touring opportunities.
“We can’t take it into the schools,” says Daune Campbell, Axis Theatre’s Tour Coordinator. “The technical requirements of the show make that impossible. But a lot of places will present the one-hour version as a matinée and the schools will bring their kids to the theatre.”
Stage Manager Sarah Wallin can attest to the show’s demanding technical requirements. It takes them at least five and a half hours to load in.
With 57 masks and 60 costumes for six actors, back stage space is also important.
“This is a such a physical show,” she Wallin, “and because of the way the actors use the set, it’s vital that everything is set up ‘just right’ in each place.”
This is Wallin’s third tour with The Number 14, having taken the show to Manitoba and Austria.
“The biggest challenge is being away from home,” she says. “This group is so fantastic and lovely to tour with, it makes everything worth while.”
In it’s 20-year history, The Number 14 has been on the road at least once every two years. There have been times when they’ve had two different productions on tour at the same time.
“It’s a large cast and crew,” says Campbell. “Sending eight people on the road for weeks or months at a time gets very expensive.”

Props table backstage at the Capitol
photo Stephen D Fowler

Even with the expense, Axis Theatre makes a concerted effort to take the show to some far-flung places. On the current tour, it went from the Fraser Valley up to Valemount before going back down to the Kootenays.
“It’s important for us to take it to places that don’t get a lot of theatre,” says Campbell. “I don’t think Valemount has had professional theatre there for 20 years.”
Axis Theatre credits much of the show’s long-term success on it appearing at various Showcase events. The 1996 CINARS showcase in Montreal led to tours in Europe and the United States, while a showcase of the Young Audience version at the International Showcase for Young Audiences in Philadelphia in 1994 was responsible for a lengthy tour of much of the US.
They still rely on Contact and Showcase events.
Campbell was at the recent Ontario Contact to promote Axis Theatre’s new show Raven Meets the Monkey King.
“It really helps that we have an Eastern Canadian tour booked for January and February,” she says. “I got to meet all the people who are presenting The Number 14. It’s great to be able to put faces to names. And because they’ve already booked one of our shows, they’re really interested in the next one.”
The Number 14 will be at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island until November 18th.
